DAY-TO-NIGHT IN SUMMER-WHITE

Summer-white and Valentino VLTN messenger bag by Charlotte Groeneveld Thefashionguitar

I know Labour Day is behind us – which in the US means we shouldn’t wear white any longer, as this national holiday marks “the end of summer” – but summer isn’t over, yet! Especially not in New York, where we live, and still have the AC running full speed, nor in Paris, where I’m jetting off to at the end of the month. And I know, because the end of September marks two special moments for me: First and foremost, it’s my birthday! And secondly, I’ve been going to Paris Fashion Week for quite some seasons now, and September is still ALWAYS hot that time of year. Soooo, tradition or no tradition, I choose to not adapt to this one for now, and keep on wearing white for as long as the weather allows me…

And in the spirit of the last “two-in-one” I decided to take the white dress out on two occasions. Of course two different white dresses; arial country-style Isabel Marant, and sophisticated elegance with Ganni. I could obviously not resist adding a grungy pair of boots, which is kind of what I want to show you, too: How you can combine boots like these with dresses, and in an evening look. Anyway, lots of inspiration in one go, but I owed it to you, because it’s been so quiet here on thefashionguitar.com due to a pile of work the size of a triple-decker…

For the FIRST look I take you with me on my morning school run/downtown commute/breakfast meeting. A simple, cotton, white dress combined with chunky boots and a studded bag by Valentino for a little more edge.

The SECOND look is one I worn on my date night with Thomas. If I would have put a pair of heels under this dress, Thomas would have said “it’s not really you”, as he knows – and loves – the fact I pair gowns with sneakers, so to speak. So in this case, an elegant long polka dot makes for such an interesting look when combined with the Proenza Schouler boots and a fun Jimmy Choo clutch If it were up to me, there was no other way…

Finally, proof that Sister Act is a biracial lesbian rom-com

sister act

“I thought, being away from your convent, that even someone like you could get lonely,” purrs Sister Mary Robert, batting her eyelashes at Deloris. Disguised as a nun, Deloris smiles shyly, feeling safe and at ease for the first time since hiding in the convent.

The 1992 comedy Sister Act was ahead of its time; it challenged the church, tradition and intersectional feminism. But many people don’t know that it also tackled star-crossed, biracial lesbian love affairs in the…

An exclusive first look at Kanye West’s new Calabasas zine

PAGE 28

A shiny yellow Chevrolet; phone lines reaching into a blue sky above a dusty yellow hillside; signs advising on the price of the fuel that keeps the traffic surging around the sprawling arteries of Los Angeles. Shot in Calabasas, Jackie Nickerson’s latest photography zine for Kanye West’s Yeezy feels like a postmodern ode to the myths and symbols of California.

The zine is being sent out to everyone who…

Teyana Taylor’s new chain literally says ‘Fuck Donald Trump’

Fashion is often used as a way for people to communicate their identity, without having to say anything. It could be via slogan tees like Maria Grazia Chiuri’s ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ at Dior, or like girls you might have known who wear their names in swirly fonts on gold chains around their necks – you know in case you (or they) forgot who they were.

Teyana Taylor has put…

How the female experience dominated London Film Festival

The Slits

Last month the BFI launched the BFI Filmography – the inaugural living record of UK cinema. The filmography features films dating back to 1911 through to the present day, with data from over 10,000 films and the 250,000 cast and crew members. Perhaps unsurprisingly – the data reveals the yawning gender imbalance prevalent in UK film. This gap is surely felt at this year’s…

Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut is a coming-of-age triumph

Lady-Bird

Early on in Lady Bird, the solo director-writer debut from Greta Gerwig, the 17-year-old title character, played by Saoirse Ronan, delivers a dramatic statement to her mother and leaps from a moving car. It’s funny, sad and impulsive. Moreover, it establishes the tone of the poignant movie that follows.

First, let’s cut to the chase: if you love Frances Ha, then…

Yayoi Kusama implements 30-second selfie rule at exhibition

Infinity Mirrors

Yayou Kusama is probably the most Intagrammed artist out there. If your selfie of you standing inside the Infinity Rooms doesn’t get posted then were you even there? Earlier this year, one of Kusama’s pumpkin sculptures was damaged by an exhibition attendee desperate for that perfect pic, an incident that probably led to Kusama banning photography in the room showing ‘All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins (2016), which features more than 60 pumpkins lit by LED and displayed on a black…

Phoebe English reflects on six years of design at V&A show

phoebe english v&a fashion in motion raphael gallery

With the current speed of fashion, sometimes years will pass in the blink of an eye. That is the case for designer Phoebe English, who last week celebrated six years since she started her eponymous label. What better way to contemplate how far she has come in that time, than by throwing a retrospective show at the V&A for its Fashion in Motion series.…
